Newly opened Halal restaurant in Sapporo!
Hokkaido is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan, known for its seafood thanks to its long coastline. While seafood is generally considered Halal, the use of alcohol in many Japanese seasonings means that some Muslim travelers may not consider it fully Halal.

Minami-n-Chi, a newly opened restaurant in Sapporo, Hokkaido, is proud to offer fully Halal-certified meals. It’s great news for Muslim travelers looking for a trustworthy Halal dining option in the region!
What is special about Minami-n-Chi?
Minami-n-Chi, which literally means “House of the South,” has recently opened a new restaurant in Sapporo, Hokkaido—but this is not their first location. Their original branch is in Mashike, in the northern part of Hokkaido, an area known for its abundance of fresh seafood.
However, the Mashike restaurant operates only during the summer months—about three months each year—due to the region’s harsh winter weather and limited tourist activity during that time. Now, with the opening of their Sapporo branch, Minami-n-Chi is able to welcome guests year-round.

By opening a restaurant that operates year-round, Minami-n-Chi can now offer customers the finest quality seafood, delivered fresh from Hokkaido’s seafood paradise. One of their signature dishes is the seafood bowl—so beautifully arranged, it looks just like a jewelry box.
Why is the restaurant recommended for Muslim travelers?
Since the restaurant primarily serves seafood, many Muslim travelers consider the food to be generally Halal. However, the restaurant has chosen to go a step further by obtaining official Halal certification, which involves a very strict process.
When preparing food for Muslim customers, they ensure that sushi rice is substituted with plain white rice, as sushi rice typically contains mirin (an alcoholic seasoning) and vinegar that may include traces of alcohol. Similarly, ikura and tobiko (fish roe) are replaced with crab meat and other fish options, as the original roe is also prepared with mirin.

The restaurant offers a meat dish that is not processed according to Halal standards by default, but they can substitute it with Halal-certified beef upon request. This meat is stored separately in a designated Halal-only refrigerator to prevent cross-contamination.

So far, the restaurant is the only Halal-certified Sushi restaurant in Hokkaido.
