Hokkaido is one of Japan’s most popular destinations for Muslim travelers, offering beautiful nature and comfortable summers, as well as world-famous powder snow in winter.
In this article, we focus specifically on what Muslim travelers should know before visiting Rusutsu Resort, including Halal dining, Muslim-friendly services and important things to prepare in advance.
Rusutsu Resort in Summer and Winter
Located about two hours from Sapporo, Rusutsu Resort is a large year-round resort.
In summer, you can enjoy a large amusement park with roller coasters, family attractions and outdoor activities. In winter, the resort transforms into a major ski resort famous for its powder snow.
For families, it is a convenient place to spend several days enjoying Hokkaido without moving between different hotels.

Why Is Rusutsu Muslim-Friendly?
One of the biggest advantages for Muslim travelers is the staff. Nearly 50 employees at the resort come from Indonesia, so Muslim guests can often find staff who understand the needs of Muslim travelers.

Halal-certified restaurant: Sekkatei
Rusutsu’s Japanese restaurant Sekkatei (雪花亭) is Halal-certified, making it one of the most reassuring dining options at the resort.
Dinner is a Japanese shabu-shabu set meal, costing around ¥10,000 per person, while breakfast is around ¥3,300 per person.
If you want to eat at Sekkatei, make sure to make a reservation in advance. The restaurant does not operate every day, especially outside peak periods, so check the operating schedule before your trip.

Important Things Muslim Travelers Should Know
Halal food is not available everywhere
Even though Rusutsu has a Halal-certified restaurant, the resort’s souvenir shops do not carry Halal instant meals or Muslim-friendly emergency food.
The buffet restaurants are also not Halal.
This means that if Sekkatei is closed during your stay, finding suitable food inside the resort can therefore be difficult.
We recommend preparing some food before leaving Sapporo.

Sapporo shuttle bus
Rusutsu has traditionally offered a free shuttle bus from Sapporo with advance reservation. However, from the 2026–27 winter season, the service will become paid. Check the latest schedule and fare when planning your trip.
Check the amusement park height restrictions
Rusutsu’s amusement park has many exciting rides, but children under 130 cm cannot use many of the major attractions.
If you are traveling with young children, check the height requirements in advance and decide which attractions they can enjoy before your visit.

Prepare Before You Go
Rusutsu is a very good option for Muslim travelers, especially because of its Indonesian staff and Halal-certified Japanese restaurant.
However, Muslim-friendly does not mean that every restaurant and shop is Halal.
If you are visiting Rusutsu, we recommend preparing Halal instant meals and emergency food in Sapporo before heading to the resort.
