What is Shojin?

Shojin in Japanese culture means vegetarian meal in Buddhist practice. As killing should be avoided in Buddhist telling, monks and people who attend funerals especially, are offered this vegetarian meal.

Shojin vegetarian usually does not contain leek or garlic, and it contains more of soy product such as Tofu and Natto fermented beans. Japanese home dish, Koya Tofu, is named such because Mt. Koya which is located in Wakayama prefecture is famous for Shojin vegetarian meal.

As Japanese dish can contain small portion of Alcoholic seasonings, vegetarian meal cannot be purely Halal for some of you. However, as they never contain animal-derived ingredients, it can be an option for some of you.
