Reasonable Halal soup curry in Sapporo.
When we travel, we all want to try a local cuisine that can be enjoyed only in that place. Yes, it is difficult for Muslims, because Japan is not a Muslim country, and many of them contain non-halal meat and animal derived ingredients.
Crazy Spice is a famous curry shop in Hokkaido, originating in Otaru. They have total of 12 branches, including one in Okinawa. Let’s see how they are special and is our recommendation today.
What is soup curry?
Many of you should wonder, “what is Soup Curry?”. As the term indicated, it is a curry diluted with broth soup, and often served with large-cut vegetables and meat. The curry is a lot more runnier than normal Japanese curry, and it is one of the must-try local dishes from Hokkaido.
There are many famous soup curry shops in Hokkaido, but there are only a few offering soup curry with Halal meat. Crazy Spice, although they have some pork selections, have confirmed that they use Halal chicken in their soup curry.

Crazy Spice is a chain curry shop, whose shops are in Sapporo, Otaru, Osaka, Shiga and Okinawa. The owner of the restaurant is a Nepalese guy, who was very impressed by the taste of Soup Curry. He opened his first restaurant in Otaru, and expanded his restaurants to as many as 14.
Their menu is not only soup curry. They also have Nepalese curry, Naan bread and even a huge sandwich rolled with Naan. They let us choose the hotness level from 0 to even 50! So we can choose how we want our curry to be.
Most of the restaurants are located inside a shopping mall, like AEON mall, so the price is also pretty affordable. Many restaurants have English-speaking Nepalese staff also, so we can always make sure which one is the Halal curry.
How is the taste of the curry?
We have ordered their soft chicken leg curry. The staff has confirmed the chicken and the soup is 100% halal.
They are decorated with large-cut vegetables and meat and one whole chicken leg. This presents Hokkaido, a place where produces a lot of agricultural products such as potatoes and carrots.
The soup curry is not as thick as that of normal Indian/Nepalese curry, but it has so much Umami in it. Every spoon of curry has a great taste and it never makes us bored, because of the variety of vegetables and meat.
The price was only about 1,3000 yen (8 USD) and it was a very good experience.
