Sensoji Temple (浅草寺)
The area has been attracting so many Japanese people, because there is Sensoji Temple (浅草寺), which is believed to have been built more than 1,400 years ago. Because fire was the biggest threat in the city, which has burnt down the temple. What we see nowadays was rebuilt in 1964.
Shopping arcade
People visit Sensoji temple, and the shopping arcade has also developed. They have prepared sweets, souvenirs and more for the visitors. Even nowadays, we have both shops and food stalls that we can usually only in festivals.
Which is the recommended shop for Muslim travelers?
Tokiwado Kaminari Okoshi (常盤堂)
Okoshi is the traditional sweet from Asakusa area. Tokiwado is the most famous shop, and the great thing is that some of their products are Halal-certified.
They have Okoshi making experience, but as of October 2024, this making experience does not only use Halal ingredients, and require a translator as the class is only held in Japanese.
Masudaen Matcha green tea ice cream cone (増田園)
Masudaen is a tea shop located close to the Asakusa station. They have carefully-chosen Halal-certified tea selections in the shop, but what we cannot miss in this shop is the green tea ice cream cone!
Tea leaves are usually considered Muslim-friendly, but ice cream can contain emulsifier whose source is animal-derived. As their ice cream cone is also Halal-certified, this delight that can only be enjoyed in the shop.
Where to eat in Asakusa area?
It is actually one of the best places to go in Japan for Muslim travelers in terms of wide variety of restaurants.
