Useful for travel

Muslim-friendly Mochi in Lawson! Must-buy for your snack.

Everyone’s favorite Japanese sweet

Mochi, which is often translated as rice cake, is one of the most popular sweets in Japan. The sticky but sweet or savory flavor is so unique, and it is a must try when visiting Japan.

As introduced in this article Is Mochi Halal?, Mochi available at conbini is generally not Halal because it contains gelatin, an ingredient derived from animal part.

However, we have found a Muslim-friendly Mochi available at Lawson, which we are going to introduce to you today!

More details about Mochi.

What is this Muslim-friendly Mochi like?

In Lawson, we have this Mochi packed in a plastic bag. It is actually Daifuku Mochi, which is a type of Wagashi Japanese sweets that have sweet bean paste inside Mochi.

There are plain and strawberry flavors that have no gelatin inside. The product names are:

Soft rice cake stuffed with Red bean paste (北海道産小豆仕様のこしあん大福)
Amaou strawberry Daifuku (あまおう苺大福)

Instead of sweet bean paste, Amaou strawberry Daifuku has strawberry paste filling inside.

Is the Mochi Muslim-friendly / Halal?

Let’s take a look at their ingredients of the strawberry Daifuku first.

Sugar, Liquid sugar, Glutinous rice, Strawberry jam, Condensed milk, starch, dried strawberry, trehalose, emulsifier, flavoring, coloring, acidulant, Geling agent from modified starch and polysaccharide thickener, calcium citrate

Emulsifier can be animal or plant-based, which we have confirmed that the product is using plant-based one.

Of course, to guarantee the product is 100% Halal, we have to trace back all of the ingredients including manufacture process.

As we can only guarantee that the product is not using animal-derived ingredients, please be reminded that there is still a small risk of contamination in the making process.

How is the taste?

We have tried strawberry Mochi. Each Mochi is individually packed in a small plastic bag, which is great because Mochi does not get dried and we can always enjoy their fresh taste.

The taste was sweeter than usually, probably because they are using strawberry filling instead of fresh strawberry. For someone who does not like sweet red bean taste, this can be a great choice as it does not really have bean texture.
