Traveling Hokkaido as a Muslim? How to Find Halal Food Outside Sapporo

Hokkaido is famous for its beautiful nature, wide-open landscapes, mountains, lakes, farms, and countryside.

Places such as Furano, Biei, Niseko, and Shiretoko are perfect for travelers who want to experience the natural beauty of Japan.

But there is one thing Muslim travelers should know:

Halal food becomes much harder to find once you leave the major cities.

In Sapporo and Asahikawa, you can find some Halal and Muslim-friendly restaurants.

Outside these cities, however, your options can become very limited.

So what can you do?

1. Bring Halal Soy Sauce

Hokkaido is famous for its fresh seafood.

One option is to buy Halal soy sauce and enjoy a seafood bowl or sashimi using your own sauce.

However, you need to explain your requirements to the restaurant and communicate with the staff in Japanese.

You also need to make sure that the seafood and other ingredients are suitable.

It can be a good option, but it requires some preparation.

2. Arrange Halal Bento Delivery

Another option is to order Halal bento meals in advance.

Some providers can deliver refrigerated meals to your hotel.

However, you need to contact your hotel beforehand and ask whether they can receive and store refrigerated food for you.

Hotels may not always be able to accept outside food because of food safety concerns.

So this option also requires advance planning.

3. Prepare Halal Emergency Food

The easiest option is to prepare some Halal food before leaving Sapporo.

This is especially useful for road trips, outdoor activities, rural areas, and late-night hotel arrivals.

You may arrive at your hotel after the restaurant has closed.

Or you may find that there are no suitable restaurants nearby.

Having a few Halal meals in your luggage means you always have something to eat.

Just add water or hot water and curry rice is ready!
