Japan is a dream destination for many Muslim travelers. From the bright lights of Tokyo and the historic streets of Kyoto to breathtaking nature, unique culture, and world-famous food, Japan offers experiences that are difficult to find anywhere else.
The good news is that traveling in Japan has become much easier for Muslims than it was a decade ago. However, there are still a few important things you should know before you arrive.

1. Planning Ahead Is More Important Than You Think
Japan is a very convenient country, but it is not always a flexible one.
Popular restaurants can easily have waiting times of one hour or more, and some shops or restaurants may suddenly close on certain days, even if they appeared open when you were planning your trip.
For Muslim travelers, this can be even more challenging because halal and Muslim-friendly options may be limited in some areas. Always have a Plan B prepared, whether it is for dining, transportation, or sightseeing. A little preparation can save a lot of time and stress during your trip.

2. Prayer Spaces Are Not Always in Convenient Locations
Many first-time visitors assume that prayer facilities will be available wherever tourists gather. Unfortunately, this is not always the case in Japan.
Mosques are often located 10–15 minutes away from the main tourist areas, and reaching them may require a taxi or additional train ride. While prayer spaces are becoming more common, they are not available everywhere.
Before heading out each day, we recommend checking the locations of nearby mosques and prayer rooms. Knowing where you can pray in advance will help you make the most of your sightseeing time.

3. Japan Has More to See Than Most People Expect
Many visitors underestimate how much there is to experience in Japan.
If you focus only on Tokyo or only on the Osaka–Kyoto area, a five-day trip can be enough to see many of the highlights. However, if you want to enjoy both regions in a single trip, we generally recommend allowing at least seven nights.
Japan is larger than many travelers imagine, and moving between regions takes time. Giving yourself a few extra days will make your journey much more enjoyable and less rushed.
