If you are traveling in Japan, sometimes you are bored with their plain taste, and feel like having a spicy food. In Sapporo, there is a Thai restaurant that offers Halal food without any prior reservation! The name of the restaurant is Gapaou (がぱおう).

As there are not so many Halal restaurants in Sapporo that serves meat dish, this restaurant can be a great choice when you are craving for something spicy, meat dish in Sapporo.

Tell us about Gapaou.

Gapaou is located at the very convenient place. You can walk to the restaurant from JR Sapporo station and Hokkaido University, so you can visit touristic spots without wasting your time.

As introduced, Gapaou serves Thai food. Their specialty is Gapao rice, minced meat with holy basil and seasoning. They also have authentic choices, such as Curry, Tomyum soup, Somtam green papaya salad and spring rolls.

For a set menu, they serve small appetizer dish and a glass of beverage, for just a small fee of 300 yen. If you want to have a small Tomyum soup in addition to the small appetizer and beverage, then it will be 400 yen.

So, is Gapaou Halal?

They are using religiously processed chicken, but they have told us that non-chicken dishes are not Halal. Furthermore, their kitchen prepares all other dishes, including pork. So, if you are looking for a restaurant that only handles Halal dishes, then the restaurant should be avoided.

They serve alcoholic beverage in the restaurant, too.

How is the food?

Because there are so many Japanese people who are not good at spicy food, you may feel that the dish is not spicy enough, especially if you are from South Asia. But don’t worry! You can make it extra hot by paying for 100 yen.

Though the set menu is very reasonable, the portion is quite big. This is probably there are so many University Students around the area who eat a lot. Because of the egg shortage, there was no egg served on the Gapao rice we ordered, the experience in Gapaou was very satisfyig.
