Osaka, a city known as “Kudaore” — meaning “eat until you drop” — is one of the most visited cities in Japan. The city attracts not only those seeking a unique urban experience, but also food lovers like many of us.
Sushi, a traditional Japanese dish that many people want to try in Japan, is unfortunately not halal for those who consider alcohol in food to be haram. Today, we would like to introduce a “Muslim-friendly” sushi-making experience located in the heart of Osaka city center.

First of all, isn’t Sushi Halal?
Sushi is usually made with sushi rice, raw fish, and wasabi.
Because of this simple image, many Muslim travelers wonder:
“Why does a sushi experience need to be Muslim-friendly? Aren’t all the ingredients halal?”
In reality, this is not always true.
Sushi rice is mixed with vinegar, and in Japan, vinegar may contain a small amount of alcohol added after production to prevent further fermentation. In some cases, sushi rice may also include mirin, a traditional Japanese sweet seasoning made from shochu (alcohol).

In addition, some types of fish and fish roe may contain alcohol.
For example:
- Marinated fish (such as Zuke)
- Fish roe like ikura
These ingredients are sometimes mixed with alcohol to reduce strong smells.
Of course, these small amounts of alcohol will never cause intoxication.
So, if you personally believe this is acceptable, then most sushi can be considered halal.
However, if you believe these ingredients are not acceptable, it is important to choose a Muslim-friendly sushi experience, where ingredients and seasonings are carefully checked in advance.
How do they ensure the experience is Muslim-friendly?
Located in Namba, the city center of Osaka, this Muslim-friendly sushi experience venue is just a 3-minute walk from Namba Station.
Although the venue is not halal-certified, the staff fully understand what is required to maintain a Muslim-friendly environment. They carefully ensure that all fish and fish roe are alcohol-free, and that both the sushi rice and soy sauce are also Muslim-friendly.
Because this information is clearly explained at the venue, Muslim travelers can enjoy the experience without worry.
The venue does not handle pork or non-halal meat. Alcoholic beverages are available only upon request, and there is no risk of cross-contamination in the kitchen.
