If you are traveling with family, summer and early autumn are usually the most comfortable seasons.

Is Hokkaido Muslim-Friendly?

Hokkaido is improving, but independent travel requires caution.

Food Considerations

Hokkaido is becoming more Muslim-friendly, but independent travel still requires careful planning.

While some restaurants describe themselves as “Muslim-friendly,” they may still serve alcohol or pork on the same premises. Popular dishes such as ramen often use pork-based broth, and ingredients like miso or traditional sauces can contain alcohol. Seafood is widely available and generally suitable, yet cross-contamination in shared kitchens is possible.

Halal-certified restaurants can be found in larger cities such as Sapporo and Asahikawa, but options become limited in rural areas. For greater peace of mind, many Muslim travelers choose private guided tours, where ingredients are confirmed in advance, restaurants are carefully selected, prayer times are scheduled appropriately, and food preparation practices are clearly explained.

Top Destinations in Hokkaido

Capital city: Sapporo (札幌)

1 hour from the main international gateway, New Chitose Airport. Regional flights within Hokkaido are also available from Okadama (丘珠) Airport, which is located in Sapporo City. It is said that Sapporo, with a population of nearly 2 million, is the snowiest city of its size in the world.

Otaru (小樽)

This city developed as the financial center of Hokkaido, which is why you can still see some traditional Japanese buildings here—something relatively rare in Hokkaido.

The city is only 50 minutes from Sapporo Station, with direct train access to and from New Chitose Airport. It features a beautiful canal and a nostalgic atmosphere, making it a perfect destination for a short trip in Hokkaido.

Hakodate (函館)

The largest city in southern Hokkaido, Hakodate, served as an important base for the Japanese government when they began developing this vast island. Historically, the area was home not only to the indigenous Ainu people but also to Japanese settlers.

The city is highly touristic, much like Otaru. One of the most visited sites is Goryokaku (五稜郭), a star-shaped fortress that was used in battles against the new government during the Meiji era. The area is also famous for its cherry blossoms, and the view from Mt. Hakodate (函館山) is considered one of the three best night views in Japan.

Matsumae(松前)

Did you know that you can see a Japanese castle in Hokkaido as well?

Matsumae is a small town located between Hakodate and Niseko. Because this area was historically part of Japanese territory, you can still see a traditional Japanese castle here.

If you don’t have enough time to visit mainland Japan to explore classic Japanese architecture, this is a great alternative. The site is also famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms.

Asahikawa(旭川)

Hokkaido’s second-largest city, located about 150 km from Sapporo, is Asahikawa.

Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) is considered one of the top three zoos in Japan, attracting more than 3 million visitors. The zoo is known for its efforts to showcase animals in environments that closely resemble their natural habitats. You can see polar bears, penguins, and other animals that thrive in cold climates.

The city is also famous for its ramen. In addition, there are some Halal-certified restaurants in the city, which is great news for Muslim travelers.

Furano(富良野)

Furano is home to some of the most iconic scenery in Hokkaido. Its pale purple lavender fields attract millions of visitors every July. You can also enjoy beautifully arranged, colorful flower fields throughout the area.

The mysterious Blue Pond (青の池) and the vast pastoral landscapes of Biei (美瑛) are easily accessible from Furano. Together, these destinations form what is often considered the “golden route” for summer travel in Hokkaido.

Niseko(ニセコ)

Known as one of the world’s most prominent ski resorts, Niseko is famous for its exceptionally light, powdery snow. This is one of the main reasons why it attracts millions of international visitors each year, especially from Australia.

English is widely spoken in daily life, and many visitors say the atmosphere feels less like Japan and more like an international resort town.

Although travel costs here are higher than at typical ski resorts, this also means you can enjoy a more luxurious and upscale stay in Niseko.

Shiraoi(白老)

It is a very small town; however, the National Ainu Museum (Upopoy / ウポポイ民族共生象徴空間) opened in 2020.

The Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, have a unique culture, and here you can learn how they have survived the harsh natural environment of Hokkaido for centuries.

If you are an otaku or an anime fan, you may also be excited to visit the setting of Golden Kamuy (ゴールデンカムイ), which is inspired by Ainu history and culture.

Plan Your Muslim-Friendly Hokkaido Journey

Exploring Hokkaido independently can be rewarding, but it also comes with practical challenges:

Distances between cities are long, halal dining options are limited outside major areas, dedicated prayer facilities are few, and language barriers can make detailed food inquiries difficult.

For this reason, many Muslim families prefer traveling with a trusted private guide and travel agency. Our Muslim-friendly tours in Japan are designed to provide clarity and comfort throughout your journey.

We confirm ingredients in advance, schedule travel around prayer times, arrange private transportation, and plan itineraries at a family-friendly pace. Female guide support can also be arranged upon request.
